Origin/meaning

The Coat of Arms alludes to SS Peter and Paul patrons of the Strängnäs Cathedral. They can be seen in a Chapter Seal from 1298. During the 13th Century the Attributes of the Saints was placed in a Shield, a a coat of Arms was born. Thanks to a preseved Stole born by Kort Rogge Bishop of Strängnäs 1479-1501, the tinctures of this Coat of Arms is known - the Filed Or and the Key and Sword Azure. Following the Reformation the diocesean Coat of Arms fell out of use, but the use was reinstated in 1962.
