Armoiries de Ependes (Fribourg)

Official blazon

D'azur au gonfanon de gueules posé en bande au chef d'or chargé d'une croisette d'azur.

Origin/meaning

These arms are those of the ancient lords of Ependes. They appear on the Nobiliary d'Hauterive, collection of documents established under the abbot of Lenzburg (1761-1795). The lords of Ependes appear in the history of the region from the 12th to the 14th century. The first member of this family known is Henri who is cited as Lord of Ependes and knight in 1143.

The coat of arms of the sires of Ependes seem to have been adopted as communal coat of arms already in the 18th century, because they appear on a cemetery cross from 176
