Origin/meaning

The arms as an auxiliary bishop show the cross of the Archdiocese of Paderborn and the canting arms of the Hensbach family; a stallion (Hengst) over a brook (Bach). The base is taken from the (old, pre 1975) arms of the city of Herne, where he worked from 1937-1946.

As Bishop of Essen and Cardinal his arms were changed. The shield now shows the arms of the Diocese of Essen and a simplified stallion (no longer the wavy bar) and for Herne and the Ruhr area in general, the crossed mining tools. The black stallion is also part of the new (post 1975) arms of Herne and is taken from the arms of the city of Wanne-Eickel, both in the Diocese of Essen. The black of the inescutcheon also can refer to coal mining in the area.
