German	In Silber ein nimbierter schwarzbärtiger Mann in natürlichen Farben, bekleidet mit goldenem Gewande mit schwarzem Gürtel und rechtsseitiger Gürteltasche mit silberner Muschel, grünem Überwurfmantel und ebensolchem, mit einer silbernen Muschel verziertem Pilgerhut, schwarzen Sandalen und einen schwarzen Pilgerstab in der rechten Armbeuge, in den ausgestreckten Händen je einen Wappenschild haltend, rechts siebenmal von Silber und Rot geteilt, links Silber geviert, eins und vier sechsmal von Silber und Rot geteilt, in zwei und drei zwei sich berührende rote Rautenbalken aus je drei Rauten.

Origin/meaning

The arms already date from the late 14^th century and show as a main figure the local patron saint, St. James (Jakob), wearing his attribute, the shell, on his bag and hat. The saint holds two shields, the one with the red bars shows the arms of the Counts of Mansfeld, the other the quartered shield of the Counts of Quedlinburg, who descended from the Counts of Mansfeld. The Counts of Mansfeld acquired the local castle in 1394 (see also the arms of Mansfelder Land).
