Official blazon
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on May 8, 1996.

The lion is the lion of the Margraves of Meissen, as a large part of the district historically belonged to the County of Meissen. The second field shows the canting arms of the County of Henneberg, and symbolises the parts of the district that belonged to Henneberg. The lower part shows the arms of the State of Würzbrug, as the district religiously belonged to the bishops of Würzburg.

The previous arms were adopted in 1990, but never officially granted. The elements are the same as the later arms, with the addition of the arms of Sachsen in the fourth quarter. These represent the county Sachsen-Hildburghausen, which was formed in 1680 and existed until 1826.
