The Papal Keys alludes to the fact that Bishop Gijsen was consecrated Bishop in Rome by Pope Paul VI and the then Archbishop of Utrecht Cardinal Alfrink. The Lamb symbolises the Baptismal Patron of the Bishop St John the Baptist.

The mottoes "Bereidt de weg des Heren" and "Parate viam Domine" translate as "Prepare the Way of the Lord".
