Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on April 17, 1996.

The sunflower in the arms is chosen as a symbol for the agriculture in the municipality, as sunflowers are grown in large quantities in the area. The miner's tool symbolise the mining in the municipality. The lion is taken from the arms of the Dukes of Kurland (now Estonia). The Duchess of Kurland had in the 19^th century a castle in the municipality.
