Origin/meaning

Heraldic description The first quarter shows the book of the Holy Scriptures which founds the knowledge of life in God given by Christ, beginning and end of creation. The book also represents the study of Christian doctrine, the teaching of theology and the service of the Word of God which constituted his ministry.

The second quarter represents a heart surmounted by a cross, symbol of the spirituality of Blessed Charles de Foucauld and distinctive sign of the priestly Fraternities Jesus Caritas of which the bishop is a member.

The third quarter features a tree and a stream. The tree refers to the family and Beauce roots of the bishop. The watercourse is the Chaudière River which runs through Beauce from Lac Mégantic to Québec. It also recalls the Rivière du Chêne which crosses the parishes of Lotbinière where he exercised his first pastoral ministry, to flow into the Saint Lawrence River on whose shores he has served in various places since then.

The fourth quarter contains the scallop shell which appears in the coat of arms of the first bishop of Quebec, Saint François de Montmorency-Laval. The shell is also found in the coat of arms of the Séminaire de Québec where he studied. The same figure of the shell is an element of the coat of arms of Laval University where he taught theology, directed the Faculty of Theology and Religious Sciences and fulfilled various functions in the service of the University.
