Origin/meaning

The Archbishop used two shields, one with the diocesan arms and the other with hos personal arms. The menora is a symbol for the Old Testament, and refers to the fact that the archbishop was a professor in Old Testament theology in Strassbourg between 1903 and 1911. The flames rising from thw menora refer to the seven gifts of the holy ghost. The holy ghost is symbolised by the pigeon.

As bishop he used the same personal symbolism under a chief with the cross of Speyer.
