Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1817, changed on May 13, 1842 and confirmed on October 13, 1993.

The arms are based on the only known seal of the local council, dating from the 18^th century. The seal showed two spades, whose origin is not known, and the beet of the Waasland region. For the history of the beet, see Sint-Niklaas.
