The above are the large arms of the city, the middle arms are shown below, whereas the small arms only shows the shield itself.

The arms have a long history.

The first arms were granted on August 16, 1781.

Arms of/Герб Petrozavodsk

These arms show in the upper half the arms of Novgorod province, to which the town belonged at the time, and in the lower symbols for the city itself. The meaning of the hammers refers to the ores and mining in the area.

Petrozavodsk was the administrative center of the Olonets region (1784-1796) and Olonets province (1801) and during this time also used the arms of the city and region of Olonets.

In 1864 B. Kene designed new arms for the city according to the new heraldic rules. These arms were never approved. The arms showed the arms of the Olonets region and two hammers behind the shield.

On January 23, 1973 the Executive Committee of Petrozavodsk City Council announced a competition for the new city coat of arms. The winning design was approved on June 21.

These arms showed a kind of boat symbolising accommodation on the shores of Lake Onega, extensive connections and the value of Petrozavodsk as port. The sail can be seen as a rolling sheet of metal or paper, typical for the modern industries of Petrozavodsk. On the sail the date 1703 refers to the foundation of the city.

During Soviet times several designs were used as emblems/arms for the city:

In 1991 the city held again a competition for new arms and as a winner a design base don the oldest arms was chosen, with in the upper half the Olonets arms instead of the Novgorod arms:

Two other designs were similar, but showed the date 1703 or combined the old Novgorod, Olonets and Petrozavodsk arms:

In 2008 the design was modernised and the arms were officially granted in September 2015.

The city, however wanted also supporters and these were finally added in 2016. The supporters are a blacksmith for the metal industries and a Life Guard as a symbol for the military garrisons of the city in previous centuries. Another proposal for supporters is shown below (with a Roman soldier).
