QUEEN ALEXANDRA'S ROYAL ARMY NURSING CORPS, BRITISH ARMY

History: On 1 February 1919, the Nursing Service of the Army was placed upon a firm basis beeing made a Corps of the Regular Army named Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps.

Official blazon

Officers: A cross pattee (i.e. the Dannebrog), theron in the centre a cricle enclosing the letter "A", cypher of Queen Alexandra; above and resting on the top arm of the cross a crown; on either soide of the cross a branch of laurel. On the lower portion of the left branch is inscribed "Sub Cruce" and on the lower portion on the right branch is inscribed "Candida". Below the cross and on the bottom of the branches a scrolle inscribed "Q.A.R.A.N.C.". In gilt, except that the scroll is in silver plate.

Other Ranks: As Officers but in white metal and gilding metal.

Origin/meaning

The Cross symbolising the Dannebrog with the letter A relates to Queen Alexandra beeing born a Princess of Denmark. The Motto Sub Cruce Candida translate as Under the White Cross.
