Origin/meaning

The star with the initials refer to St. Mary, patron saint of both the town and diocese of Piazza Armerina, the (Greek) letters MP stand for MateR (mother). The eight rays refer to the "octava dies", the eighth day, the day of the Lord's resurrection: Christ's victory over sin and death shines brightly in his mother, preserved from original sin in her Immaculate Conception, and from the corruption of the tomb in her glorious Assumption. The blue colour is also the colour generally associated with Mary.

The stone wall is a reference to his family roots, specifically to the profession of his father. It also refers to the city Modica where the bishop was born, as almost everywhere on the Hyblean plateau dry stone walls are abundant. Finally, it also intends to convey the idea of stability and fortress, as this type of construction is particularly solid, capable of challenging the centuries and the worst weather conditions.

The staff and book refer to San Corrado Confalonieri who was a penitent, Franciscan tertiary and pilgrim, and is co-patron of the Diocese of Noto, the original Diocese of the Bishop. The Saint is mostly depicted in Franciscan dress, carrying the staff and with the book of the Gospels in his hands.
