Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on November 10, 1992.

The arms were first used around 1600, when the arms appear on the local seal. All later seals and images all show the same composition.

The meaning of the arms is not known. It looks as the Imperial Eagle, but the city never had a status of Imperial City. Probably the city simply adopted the symbol, to give a more important impression. It may also refer to the fact that the Lordship Ruhland was acquired by Emperor Charles IV in the 14th century.
