Origin/meaning
The oldest seal of the city is known from 1378 and shows a king on a throne. As the city at the time was a possession of Bohemia, it is likely to be the Bohemian king. When the city was acquired by the Dukes of Bayern, the new seal (known since 1401) showed the quartered arms of Bayern (diamonds) and the Pfalz (lion). In 1663 the above arms appeared on the seals, with the lion of the Pfalz and the Rothenberg castle in the city. In 1708 a small escutcheon with the arms of the city of Nürnberg was added, as the city had acquired Schnaittach by then. This small shield was later again removed and the arms have not changed since.
