Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on May 10, 1949.

The second and third quarter show two pencils, and are an indication of the importance of the pencil industry in the town since the 18th century. The first and fourth quarter show a man with a hammer, indicating the former iron industry in the town (Hammerwerk in German, hence the use of a hammer). The man with the hammer is also derived from the arms of the Lords of Faber, an important family, that had many interests in the local industry.

The colours blue and silver are the colours of Bayern.
