Origin/meaning

The present arms were granted in 1913 and show the lion of the Pfalz rising from a canting mountain (Berg).

Stromberg received city rights in the 13^th century from the Counts of the Pfalz, who had one of their residencies in the city. The oldest seal of the city is known from the 15^th century and shows a quartered shield. The first and fourth quarter showed a chequered field, the second and third a crowned lion. The chequered field is derived from the arms of the Fauste von Stromberg family, the lion is the lion of the Pfalz.
In the 16^th century the composition of the first and fourth quarters was replaced by the diamonds of the Wittelsbach family, Princes of the Pfalz. These were used until the late 19^th century, and were shown by Hupp in the 1920s (see below).
