Origin/meaning
The three mitres represent the diocese of Meath; the “Bantry Boat” is taken from an 8th century pillar in the town where Bishop Deenihan lived and worked for many years. It has been interpreted as the boat of St Brendan and also as a representation of the Church - carrying the people of God towards the light of heaven.
The silver star is a classical symbol of our Blessed Lady who is invoked as Star of the Sea.
The Processional Cross has five red jewels representing the five wounds of Christ, and the Jerusalem Cross; this references the Bishop’s membership of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre
The motto “Illuminabit te Christus” (Christ will give you light) is taken from the letter of St Paul to the Ephesians (5:14).
