Origin/meaning

SHIELD: The cypress tree, strong and resilient, reflects the namesake of the cutter. Blue and white are traditionally associated with the sea. The lightning flashes symbolize the electronic aspect of navigation in the Aids to Navigation. The lightning flashes also denote quick response. The white wavy bar alludes to our navigable waters the Coast Guard protects. The buoys highlight the motto and represent marine navigation aids and safe passage.

CREST: The polestar with the rope annulet represents orientation for navigation and the ring of rope, referring to a rescue tool, alludes to the recovery of persons in distress. Gold is emblematic of excellence and high achievement.

SUPPORTERS: The crossed swords represent cooperation and the Homeland Security mission to protect American lives, property and values. They also represent maritime law enforcement to protect the safety of our country’s people and marine environment.
