| English | Shoulder Sleeve Insignia. Description: On a White vertical rectangle arched convexly at top and bottom edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) Maroon border blazoned as follows: Argent, a torch of knowledge palewise base Argent (Silver Gray) enflamed Sanguine, surmounted by a pitchfork bendwise points up, tines of the second, pole Sable and rifle bendwise sinister of the last. Attached above the rectangle a White arched scroll edged Maroon inscribed “UNION” in 5/16 inch (.79 cm) Maroon letters. Attached below the rectangle a White arched scroll edged Maroon inscribed “HIGH SCHOOL” in 5/16 inch (.79 cm) Maroon letters. Overall dimensions are 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm) in height and 2 5/8 inches (6.67 cm) in width.
Shoulder Loop Insignia. Description: A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/4 inches (3.18 cm) in height overall, consisting of a shield arched at top as follows: Sable, a torch of knowledge palewise base Argent (Silver Gray) enflamed Sanguine, surmounted by a pitchfork bendwise points up, tines of the second, pole Sable and a rifle bendwise sinister of the last. Attached below a Black scroll inscribed “UNION HIGH SCHOOL” in Silver letters. |
Origin/meaning
Maroon and white are the school’s colors. The pitchfork and the rifle symbolize the battle fought during the Revolutionary War in Connecticut Farms, which is now Union. The local residents, mostly farmers, used their rifles and pitchforks for defense against the enemy. The torch of knowledge and rifle represent the military training and education the cadets receive.
The Shoulder Sleeve Insignia approved 19 May 1989 was cancelled. A new Shoulder Sleeve Insignia was approved 18 May 2001. The Shoulder Loop Insignia was approved 8 May 2001.
