UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES

Country: Australia
Campus/location : Sydney-Kensington

Arms of University of New South Wales

Official blazon

Arms : Argent, on a Cross Gules a Lion passant guardant between four Mullets of eight points Or, a Chief Sable charged with an open Book proper, thereon the word SCIENTIA in letters also Sable.
Motto: 'Manu et Mente'.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on March 3, 1952.

The lion and stars are from the Arms of the State, to which the Cross of St George also refers; the open book is self-explanatory.

'Manu et Mente' was the motto of the Sydney Technical College out of which the University, formerly called 'The New South Wales University of Technology', has developed.
