VARNIAI

County : Telšiai
Municipality : Telšiai

Coat of arms (crest) of Varniai
Official blazon
Lithuanian blazon wanted
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on March 14, 1635 and again on March 3, 1997.

Varniai (till late 16th century called Medininkai) got town rights in 1417 from Grand Duke Vytautas, but there is no evidence whether arms were granted at the same time.

The arms show St. George for two reasons: (1) Varniai as the capital of the Samogitia diocese was the stronghold of Catholicism in its fight against Protestantism; (2) St. George was the holy patron of Jurgis Tiskevicius, the then recently consecrated bishop of Samogitia. The arms were used until 1777, when the bishop of Samogitia orderedto use his own arms ass city arms.
