Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on June 3, 1913 and changed on May 9, 1989.

Zoersel was until 1839 part of the municipality of Westmalle-Zoersel. From 1839-1913 the municipality did not have its own arms, but in 1913 adopted the old arms of Westmalle-Zoersel, but in the historically correct colours.

The two villages formed an Estate until 1793. The estate was since 1738 a possession of the Powis family, and the red lion on a golden field was the arms of the Powis family.
