Gevierendeeld 1. in goud een leeuw van sabel, geklauwd en getongd van keel, en een uitgeschulpt omboordsel van keel 2. in keel drie sleutels van goud 3. in lazuur een leeuw gedwarsbalkt van zeven stukken van zilver en van keel, geklauwd, getongd en gekroond van goud 4. in goud een leeuw van sabel, geklauwd, getongd en gekroond van keel met een smalle schuinbalk van keel over alles heen; hartschild: gekeperd van twaalf stukken van goud en van keel.
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on September 3, 1980.
The arms combine elements of the former rulers in the different villages that form the current Zwalm municipality.
The first quarter shows the arms of the Land van Rode, based on the arms of Robrecht vabn Cassel, Lord of Rode in the first part of the 14th century. It represents Beerlegem, which was part of the Land van Rode.
The three keys in the second quarter are the arms of the Abbey of Saint Peter in Gent, which owned the village of Dikkele.
The third quarter shows the arms of Munkzwalm, see there. The fourth quarter shows the lion of Namur/Namen, which represents Sint-Denijs-Boekel, which was historically owned by the Counts of Namur.
The inescutcheon shows the arms of Egmond, as Nederzwalm, Paulatem, Meilegem, Sint-Maria-Latem, Rozebeke, Sint-Blasius-Boekel, Hundelgem and Roborst all belonged some time to the Counts of Egmond.
