Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted in 1820 and confirmed on November 30, 1838. The new arms were granted on January 22, 1990.

The old arms are based on the arms of the Griboval family, who used three silver stars on a black field. The Griboval family ruled the estate of Zwevegem in the 16th century.

The arms from 1838

The new arms were designed as the old arms only represented Zwevegem village and did not show the proper arms of the Griboval family. Instead the arms of the last Lords of Zwevegem, the Counts of Nassau-Corroy were chosen as the new arms. These arms combine the lion of Nassau, with the silver bar of Vianden. The supporters and crown were also derived from the arms of the Counts.
