Argent, a Cross patee quadrate Gules; a Canton Azure, charged with a Chevron Or between three Lions rampant of the first.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on May 18, 1843.

The cross is the cross of St. Cuthbert, the patron of Durham, and the Cathedral (which founded the university) was built as his shrine.
