The arms were officially granted on July 21, 1506 by Count-Palatinate Friedrich of Bayern, when he made the city capital of the newly formed Principality Pfalz-Neuburg. The castle as a symbol for the city, however, is much older. The oldest seal, dating from the early 14th century, already shows a castle. The castle (Burg) is canting. In the arms the two boys are the princes Ottheinrich and Philipp, the diamonds are taken from the arms of Bayern and the lion is the lion of the Pfalz.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on July 21, 1506 by Count-Palatinate Friedrich of Bayern, when he made the city capital of the newly formed Principality Pfalz-Neuburg. The arms replaced older arms (see image below).
