Origin/meaning
Gundelfingen became a city around 1280, but the oldest known seal dates from around 1300. It showed the old lion of Bayern under a tree. The tree can be a canting symbol (Gundebra is a type of tree in the local dialect). From 1386 the lion is standing, holding a tree. The new arms of Bayern were added in 1462 as a small shield on the lion. As coloured arms the image is known since the 16th century. In the 19th century the tree was made a pine tree and the colours often changed. In 1955 the arms were officially granted and based on a seal from 1462 and in historical colours.
