Official blazon
German In Blau mit schwarzem Schildbord ein golden gekrönter und golden bewehrter, siebenmal von Silber und Rot geteilter Löwe.
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The lion in the arms is the lion of Hessen, which already appears in the oldest known seal of the town, dating from the early 14th century. In the 16th century the lion was accompanied by a tower and in 1605 the border was added.

In the 19th century the lion was placed in a silver shield, which, in turn, became blue again in the late 19th century.

As the arms were never officially granted, it was proposed in the 1950s to change the field into silver and to make the lion red. This was proposed as the colours in the arms are heraldically not correct.
