The arms were officially granted in 1928 and again on December 6, 1978.

The town, however used from 1924-1978 the arms shown below.  
The arms are based on the oldest known seal of Furth im Wald, dating from the late 14<sup>th</sup> century. It showed a divided shield with in the upper half the diamonds of Bayern, and in the lower an empty field. Over the division line a wavy bar was shown. The wavy bar may be a canting symbol for the city (Furt=ford). Later the upper part was transformed into a chief and the bar became part of the lower part of the arms. In the 18th and 19<sup>th</sup> century the lower part was often decorated with flowers, trees or even landscapes. In 1924 these unheraldic devises were removed, but the shield division remained.
