Official blazon

Troncato d’argento e di nero.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on November 21, 1934.

Siena was founded by Emperor Augustus around 10 AD. The origin of the arms are not known, but date back to the 14th century. The following legend refers to the arms :
The arms are also called the "balzana" and it has a legendary origin. The legends tells that Siena was founded by the two sons of Remo (one of the brothers who were nursed by the capitoline she-wolf) who had escaped from Rome riding two horses. One of them was white and the other black and for this reason the "balzana" has these colours. Also the name of the city is connected with this legend. In fact Senio was the name of one of the Remo's sons.
