Origin/meaning
The Red background and Black Pale symbolises the Amsterdam Origins of the namegiver Lieutenant Jan Carel Josephus van Speijk (1802-1831). During the Belgian Revolt he commanded the Gunboat Zr.Ms. No 2. During the siege of Antwerp on 5 February 1831, the Gunboat was in danger of running ashore and falling into Belgian Hands. Van Speijk then ordered the Boat to be blown up, he hinslef died in the explosion. The Motto meaing "Then rather up in the air" is said to be van Speijk's last words. The Badge was approved 13 March 1953.
Several Ships have born the name, 1st a Gunboat in Service 1946-1960, 2nd a Accomodation Ship in Service 1960-1965, 3rd a Frigate in Service 1965-1986, 4th a Minehunter in Service 1986-1994 and 5th a Frigate in Service since 1995.
