Origin/meaning

The arms are a combination of the arms of the former territories from which the département was formed. The chains are the symbol of Navarra; the two cattle are the symbol of the Béarn.
The third quarter shows the arms of the Labourd region and the fourth quarter shows the lion of the Soule.
