Origin/meaning
Neustadt an der Donau (at the time known as Seligenstadt) received city rights in 1273 and the oldest seal probably dates from the same year, but is known only since 1334. The seal shows two towers with in between a small shield with the arms of the Wittelsbach family, who ruled the city at the time. A seal from 1423 shows the shield in a gate, but other seals and images only show the towers and the shield with the diamonds. Until the 17th century the shield was placed tilted, but ever since it has been placed horizontally as in the arms above.
