Origin/meaning

The town was a possession of the Counts of Castell from the 13^th century until 1533. The oldest seal dates from the early 16^th century and already shows a shield with a pawless front part of a dog (canting element, from Rüde, a kind of hunting dog), coming from the side of the shield.

The dog was also used as a crest by the Lords of Gnottstat, who had the village in loan from the Counts of Castell. In the seals from the early 19^th century the dog was shown as above, with the front paws and part of the back. This composition has not changed since.
