Origin/meaning

Blue and Gold symbolise the US Navy, Red symbolises valour and Rear Admiral Sampson's Wartime service. The two Silvers Stars symbolises the highest rank awarded to Rear Admiral Sampson upon his retirement. The Fie gold Stars symbolises the five Ships Sampson commanded (Alert, Mayflower, Swatara, San Fransicso and Iowa). The three lightning flashes symbolises the technology of the USS Sampson and the number also indicates the former ships named Sampson. The smaller inner shiled with and embattled portion on top and the lion recalles the Spanish ensign of 1898 during the Spanish-American War. The Lion also represent the courage of Rear Admiral Sampson commandig the Vessels that defeated the Spanish Fleet. The Battle Axe symbolises the Ship's execution of military duties at sea. The Bronze Star symbolises the Battle Star earned by the second Ships named for Rear Admiral Sampson during World War II. The Laurel Wreath commemorates the Namesake's distinguised naval career. The Roses alludes to the State Flower of New York, birthplace of Rear Admiral Sampson. the number allued to the various naval positions held by him during the career, including Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance and Commandant of the Boston Navy Yard.
