English Argent a cross entire gules in the dexter canton the bust of Virgil affronty proper crowned with a laurel wreath; ensigned with a mural crown befitting a city.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on December 26, 1941.

Publius Vergilius Maro (the poet Virgil) was born in Andes near Mantua 15 Oct BC 70, according to later Roman commentators. The cross has been used a symbol for the city since medieval times. To distinguish the arms from other arms with a singe red cross, the bust was added.
