Origin/meaning

The arms were officially adapted in 1970 and again in 1991.

Handlová was founded in the 13th century by German peasants and miners who worked in the mines in the area. It received town and other rights on March 8, 1376. The oldest known seal dates from the 15th century and already shows the broken wheel, the symbol of St. Catherine, the local patron saint.

In the current arms the saint is placed behind the shield, until 1991 the whole composition was placed on a shield as shown below.
