Coupé: au 1er d'or à un lion léopardé de sable, armé et lampassé de gueules, au 2e d'argent à un dauphin couché d'azur, barbé, crêté, lorré, oreillé et peautré de gueules.

Origin/meaning

The fish is the oldest known symbol of the city and can already be seen on a seal of the city from 1244. The lion is the lion of Flandre/Vlaanderen as the city was made into a larger port by the Counts of Vlaanderen in the 13 and 14th centuries.
