Origin/meaning
Iphofen received city rights in 1293 and the two oldest seals show the image of the Bishop of Würzburg as the city was part of the State of Würzburg. Around 1390 the above composition of a hat with two banners appeared on the secret seal of the city. The banners are those of the State of Würzburg. The hat is a symbol of the vigilance of the population. The size and shape of the hat has changed considerably, according to the fashion of the time. As the origin of the hat is not very clear, there has been much speculation throughout the centuries.
