Origin/meaning

The town got city rights as early as 1213. The arms probably date from the 15th century, but the exact date of a grant is not known.

The arms show a tower and the arms of the Vrtba family, who descended from Hroznata von Ovenec, who, in the 12th century ruled the are and after whom the town was named.
