97TH INTELLIGENCE SQUADRON, US AIR FORCE
History: Organized as 97 Aero Squadron on 20 Aug 1917. Demobilized on 3 Feb 1919. Reconstituted, and consolidated (1936) with the 97 Observation Squadron, which was constituted, and activated, on 1 Mar 1935. Redesignated as: 97 Observation Squadron (Medium) on 13 Jan 1942; 97 Observation Squadron on 4 Jul 1942; 97 Reconnaissance Squadron (Fighter) on 2 Apr 1943; 97 Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron on 11 Aug 1943. Disbanded on 15 Apr 1944. Reconstituted, and consolidated (1 Oct 1993) with the 6949 Security Squadron, which was designated, and activated, on 1 Mar 1979. Redesignated as: 6949 Electronic Security Squadron on 1 Aug 1979; 6949 Electronic Security Group on 1 Jan 1980; 6949 Electronic Security Squadron on 1 Aug 1981; 97 Intelligence Squadron on 1 Oct 1993.
Maintained and repaired aircraft, 1917-1918. Antisubmarine patrols, 18 Dec 1941-Sep 1942; trained, and supported ground forces on maneuvers, Sep 1942-Apr 1944.
