SCHONGAU

State : Bayern
District (Kreis) : Weilheim-Schongau (until 1973 Schongau)

Wappen von Schongau/Arms (crest) of Schongau
Official blazon
German In Gold ein schwarzer Adler mit roter Zunge, im Brustschild die bayerischen Rauten.
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

Schongau was already a large city when it became part of Bayern in 1268. The oldest seal dates from around 1250 and shows, as does the second seal, only the Royal eagle. In the third seal from 1393 the arms of Bayern were added as breast shield. The arms have thus never changed since, except in the 19th century when the breast shield was not always used.
