Origin/meaning

After the changes in the Statute for the Kingdom, Sint Maarten became an independent Country. Unlike Curaçao and Aruba, the other 2 Countries in the Caribbean, Sint Maarten did not have a permanent military presence. This was repaired by establishing a permanent Marine Support Point. When developing the Emblem, the tradition was maintained that the Emblems of Barracks in 'de West' depict local Flora or Fauna. After consulting Naturalis in Leiden, the small Staff of the Support Center opted for the iguana themselves. The Emblem Motto (translated as Always Helpful) refers to the main tasks of the unit, which is to provide assistance to the national government.
