Distinctive Unit Insignia, Description: A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/16 inches (2.70 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield: Per bend Or and Azure on the last a dragon with a death's head salient Or emitting from the mouth fire and smoke Proper. Origin/meaning
Coblat Blue and Golden Yellow are the Colours of the Chemical Warfare Service. The Dragon with a Death's Head symbolises the function of the Battalion. Chemistry is symbolised by the Green Mounts in the Crest. Indicating Air, Fire and Earth the ancient symbols of Chemistry. The fifth element Water is symbolised by the blue colour of the fleur-de-lis. The Cross symbolises the French Croix-de-Guerre awarded to the Battalion. The Mounts further indicated the mountainous region of Italy where the Battalion served during World War II. The Region is also represented by the Roman Spears, which further recalls the two major assaults and amphibious operations in which the Battalion participated. The Gold and Silver Burst behind the Mounts represents a Mortar Attack.
The arms were approved on 6 November 1942. It was amended to add a Crest on 7 December 1993. The Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 6 November 1942. It was amended to update the description on 2 January 1987. The insignia was amended to revise the description on 7 December 1993.
