These arms are based on the arms of the town of [[Richmond (Yorkshire)|Richmond]] in England. For the Richmond in America the tinctures of field and orle are reversed. The blue suggests the completion of Americanization and is a most appropriate background for the silver stars of Our Lady, which also refer to Virginia (virgin). Instead of a single star, three are used for added beauty of effect, the number itself always honoring the Blessed Trinity.
