Saint Cloud (Clodoaldus) was the grandson of Clovis, the first Christian King of France, and son of Clodomir, King of Orleans. This, of course, was in pre-heraldic times. But the medieval heralds delighted in assigning to the early worthies apocryphal, retroactive arms, and to Clovis and Clodomir alike they naturally assigned the shield called " France ancient" (azure, seme of fleurs-de-lis or) used by later Kings of France. | |||

Origin/meaning
Saint Cloud (Clodoaldus) was the grandson of Clovis, the first Christian King of France, and son of Clodomir, King of Orleans. This, of course, was in pre-heraldic times. But the medieval heralds delighted in assigning to the early worthies apocryphal, retroactive arms, and to Clovis and Clodomir alike they naturally assigned the shield called " France ancient" (azure, seme of fleurs-de-lis or) used by later Kings of France.
The diocesal arms thus also use these apocryphal arms on the shield.
