Origin/meaning
The inspiration for his arms was taken from the coat of arms of his paternal uncle, Gaspar Odile Marie Schotte. From these arms the church, river and star elements are taken.
The first quarter shows the outline of the church at CICM (Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary) headquarters in Scheut, Brussels (Belgium). The churchbuilding was added to an existing old Gothic chapel, constructed at the instigation of a shepherd who in a vision saw Mary, "Our Lady of Grace" and was told to build on the spot a two spire church. This church stood as the symbol of the CICM society until it was torn down to allow for commercial exploitation of the property. It is included in the first quarter in order to exemplify a total commitment, also as bishop, to the missionary ideals of CICM. The cross over the church refers to Jesus the Lord in whose Name the bishop's mission is carried out.
The blue and silver horizontal bars are taken from the coat of arms of the medieval Lords of Beveren and refer to his hometown Beveren-Leie (the village itself never had arms). The wavy gold bend refers to the river Leie, the northern borderline of the town. In medieval times it supported a blooming linen industry and was called by the British merchants "The Golden River".
The star in the fourth quarter is the heraldic symbol for Mary, Star of the Sea or Morning Star. The inclusion of this symbol wants to express the devotion to the Mother of" Jesus, and also Patron to whom the CICM is dedicated under the title "Immaculate Heart of Mary".
