Shoulder Sleeve Insignia. Description: A rectangular shaped device peaked at the top and pointed in base with a scroll conforming to the shape of the rectangle attached below, the overall dimensions 3 inches (7.62 cm) in height and 2 1/2 inches (6.35 cm) in width, consisting of a blue background edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) yellow border on which is the silhouette of a soldier of the Spanish American War era mounted on a galloping horse, all yellow. On a blue scroll edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) yellow border the inscription “ROUGH RIDERS” in scarlet letters.
Shoulder Loop Insignia. Description: A gold color metal and enamel insignia 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall, consisting of a shield divided horizontally into two equal halves red over blue, the lower half bearing a gold demi-sun in splendor surmounted by a gold bear on a green mound. Attached below the shield an arced red scroll inscribed “LOS ANGELES USD” in gold letters.
Origin/meaning
The Shoulder Sleeve Insignia was approved 11 March 1975. The Shoulder Loop Insignia was originally approved 20 November 1931. It was amended on 10 May 1976 to add a Motto Scroll.
