Origin/meaning

The green refers to the importance of the rural world in the Manche department, the gold symbolises faith, justice and the elevation of the soul. They are separated by a wavy division line as the diocese is surrounded on three sides by the sea.

The anchor is a symbol of hope and charity. The ears of wheat and millet that surround it refer to the profession of flour miller that the bishop exercised in his youth on the one hand and the twenty-five years of priestly ministry that he experienced in the Mandara Mountains in North Cameroon. .

The two hearts of Jesus and Mary in chief recall Saint Jean Eudes who worked a lot in the diocese of Coutances. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is represented as it is stylized in the spiritual family which is inspired by Charles de Foucauld to which the bishop belongs. The second heart stands for St. Mary, his second baptismal name.

The sword with the two wings refers to the archangel Saint Michael, venerated for over thirteen centuries on the Mont-Saint-Michel, the well known island in the diocese.

The crozier in the shape of a shepherd's crook placed behind the shield reminds us that the bishop is not the leader but the servant of the Lord's flock that the Church entrusts to him.

The motto “Ibat cum illis” (he walked with them) is taken from the Gospel of Luke in chapter 24, verse 15.
